The 121st Anniversary of the Victory of the Battle of Adwa Celebration
For the sixth time since its insception, Ethiopian Heritage Society in North America (EHSNA) has celebrated the great victory Ethiopia achieved against the invading Italian forces. This event which was held on March 4, 2017 at the Civic Center in downtown Silver Spring, MD was attended by over 600 peoples
The historical victory of the Battle of Adwa, which was achieved with the leadership of Emperor Menlik II, otherwise known by his admirers as “the General”, and his right arm Queen Taitu and with the heroic participation and sacrifies of, both men and women from every corner of Ethiopia. This has happened due to presence of Ethiopians and other Black people all over the world still remember and celebrate this historical victory Ethiopia achieved over the Italian invaders. History remembers this to be the first time a black nation ever defeated a white invader and thus it became a reason for pride and dignity for black people.
Ethiopian Heritage Society in North America is also proud to announce, that for two consecutive years, the Executive of Montgomery County, the Honorable Isiah Leggett, has issued a proclamation dedicating March 2017 as the Victory of the Battle of Adwa Month. In behalf of our self and the multitude supporters in the Ethiopian community we extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Honorable Mr. Leggett for this recognition and continued support he provided to us throughout the year.
We are also proud to acknowledge that Mr. Tom Hucker, Councilmember, District 5, Montgomery County, MD has awarded a certificate to Ethiopian Heritage Society in North America in recognition of “The 121st Anniversary of the Ethiopian Army’s victory in the Battle of Adwa….”. Mr. Hucker is also a longtime supporter of EHSNA and a friend to the Ethiopian Community in Montgomery County.
As in the past we once again encourage Ethiopians throughout the world to formally celebrate the Victory of Adwa and make effort for this historical event to gain the recognition it deserves from their local and state governments. We hope this Proclamation from the Honorable Mr. Leggett and the certificate from Mt. Hucker will set an example for other Ethiopian communities throughout the world to follow.
Finally, in behalf of EHSNA and those milions Ethiopians who are proud admirers of the Victory of the Battle of Adwa, we express our heartfelt gratitude to the main speaker at the event Professor Haile Larebo. We also extend our thanks to Ato Mesfin Feyissa Robi, as well as to the other participants in the program. Special thanks to the hundreds of our supporters who joined us on March 4, 2017 to celebrate the 121st Anniversary of the Victory of the Battle of Adwa.
